He Mixed It Three Times. It Still Sounded Wrong in the Car. Here Is Why.

He had mixed the track on a Tuesday. By Wednesday he had mixed it again. By Thursday he had mixed it a third time, each time adjusting the low end because it sounded muddy on his monitors but thin everywhere else. He sent it to the artist. The artist played it in the car and called back: "The bass is gone."

This is one of the most common and most expensive problems in Nairobi's growing home studio scene. And it is almost never the mix. It is the monitors.

Here is the mechanism that most people are never taught.

Consumer speakers, including many Bluetooth speakers, laptop speakers, and even some "studio" speakers sold at low price points, are voiced. That means the manufacturer has deliberately boosted certain frequencies, usually the low bass and the upper presence range, to make music sound exciting and full on their product. When you mix on a voiced speaker, you hear a version of your track that has been coloured before it reaches your ears. You compensate by pulling down the bass because it sounds too heavy. Then on a flat, uncoloured playback system, the bass you pulled down is simply gone.

A true studio monitor is designed to be as flat as possible across its frequency range. It is not supposed to sound exciting. It is supposed to sound accurate. When a monitor is accurate, what you hear is what is actually in the recording. If the bass is muddy on an accurate monitor, the bass is genuinely muddy and needs to be fixed. If it sounds right on an accurate monitor, it will translate correctly to car speakers, earbuds, phone speakers, and broadcast systems.

The second variable that Nairobi studios underestimate is room interaction. An 8-inch woofer in a small untreated room will excite room modes, standing waves at specific frequencies that cause certain bass notes to boom while others disappear. This is why the same monitor can sound completely different in two different rooms. The solution is not always acoustic treatment first.
