Your Church Speaker Is Not Too Quiet. Your Room Is Too Confused.

The volume is at 80 percent. The sound operator is leaning into the desk. The congregation in the back three rows is still straining to hear the preacher clearly, and someone near the front is already wincing. The problem, everyone assumes, is that the speaker is not powerful enough.

So the church goes looking for something with a bigger wattage number on the box.

This is one of the most expensive misunderstandings in Kenyan church audio.

Here is what is actually happening.

Speaker wattage tells you how much power the speaker can handle without breaking. It says very little about how loud it gets in your specific room. The number that governs loudness is called sensitivity, measured in dB SPL at 1 watt, 1 metre. A speaker rated at 100 dB sensitivity will produce noticeably more volume from the same amplifier than one rated at 96 dB, even if the 96 dB box has a higher wattage rating printed on it.

Every 3 dB of sensitivity difference is roughly equal to doubling your amplifier power. Let that sit for a moment.

Now add the second variable: room behaviour. Most Nairobi church buildings, especially newer ones, use hard-finished walls, ceramic floors, and flat ceilings. Sound reflects off every surface. Those reflections arrive at your congregation's ears a few milliseconds after the direct sound, and when they pile up in the wrong way they create a muddy, unclear wash where the direct signal used to be crisp. Turning the volume up only turns up the reflection problem alongside the direct sound.

The fixes are not always about buying a bigger speaker. They involve placing speakers closer to the congregation rather than higher on a wall, angling them downward to throw sound at people rather than at the opposite wall, and choosing a speaker with controlled dispersion so the energy goes where bodies are sitting, not where tiles are waiting to reflect it.

Walk to the back row of your church while someone speaks at normal preaching level into the mic. Now walk to the front row. If the volume feels roughly similar but the back sounds muddier or harder to understand, your problem is room reflection and speaker placement. If both rows feel equally quiet, then your amplifier output might genuinely be insufficient. Knowing which problem you have first means you spend money on the right solution.
