The Studio That Sounded Perfect in the Room and Terrible Everywhere Else (A Before/After Story)

He had spent four months building his home studio in South B. Acoustic foam on every wall. A good condenser microphone. A decent audio interface. He mixed a track, played it back in the room, and it sounded full, warm, and balanced. He sent it to a friend with studio monitors in Westlands. The friend called back: "The low end is completely gone. And there is a weird resonance around 200Hz."
He had not made a bad mix. He had made a mix that was accurate to a room that was lying to him.
Here is what was actually happening:
Every room has a frequency response. It is not flat. It never is. The dimensions of the room, the materials on the walls, the furniture, the ceiling height, all of these create standing waves: frequencies that build up or cancel out at specific points in the room. When you sit at your mix position, you are hearing the room's response layered on top of your speakers' response. If your room has a 6dB boost at 80Hz (very common in small square rooms), you will mix the bass down by 6dB to compensate. When that mix plays on a flat system, the bass will be 6dB too quiet.
This is called the room transfer function, and it is the reason why mixes made in untreated rooms rarely translate.
The before picture:
His room was 3.5m x 3.5m, almost perfectly square. Square rooms are the worst possible shape for acoustics because the parallel walls create strong standing waves at the room's fundamental frequency and its harmonics. He had covered the walls in 5cm acoustic foam. Foam that thin absorbs high frequencies well but does almost nothing below 500Hz. So his room was dead in the highs (making it feel "controlled") but completely untreated in the low-mids and bass, where the real translation problems live.
His mix position was against the back wall, which placed him at a bass pressure maximum: the point in the room where bass frequencies pile up most aggressively. Every mix he made had too little bass because the room was telling him there was too much.
The after picture:
He made three changes, none of which required rebuilding the room:
First, he moved his mix position 38% of the way into the room from the front wall (a standard acoustic recommendation for minimizing bass buildup at the listening position). This alone reduced the 80Hz buildup at his ears by approximately 4dB.
Second, he added two floor-to-ceiling bass traps in the front corners of the room. Bass frequencies accumulate in corners because that is where the pressure from multiple wall reflections converges. Thick, dense absorption in the corners (minimum 30cm depth, not foam, but rigid fiberglass or rockwool) treats the frequencies that foam cannot touch.
Third, he calibrated his studio monitors using a measurement microphone and room correction software, which gave him a reference curve that accounted for his room's remaining anomalies.
The next mix he sent to Westlands came back with one word: "Clean."

Play a track you know well on your studio monitors. Then play it on your phone speaker, your car stereo, and a pair of consumer headphones. Note where the differences are most obvious. Is the bass heavier or lighter on your monitors than everywhere else? Is there a frequency range that sounds harsh in the room but disappears on other systems?
