The 7-Cable Mistakes Killing Your School's Sound System (Before Anyone Touches the Volume)

The deputy principal walks into the hall five minutes before the graduation ceremony begins. The MC taps the microphone. Nothing. A prefect runs to the back, wiggles a cable, and suddenly there is sound, but only from one side. The ceremony starts late. The parents in the back rows hear almost nothing. The school's brand-new sound system, bought six months ago, looks like it is broken.
It is not broken. The cables are.
Here is what most schools never get told:
Cables are not passive accessories. They are active signal carriers, and every weak point in a cable run is a point where your audio can degrade, cut out, or introduce noise. In a school environment specifically, cables face conditions that would stress even professional touring rigs: they get coiled tightly and stored in cupboards, stepped on during events, pulled out of sockets by students who do not know better, and left plugged in for weeks at a time in humid Nairobi weather.
The result is not always a dead cable. Often it is something worse: an intermittent cable. One that works during setup, fails during the event, and works again when you test it afterward. Intermittent faults are the hardest to diagnose and the most embarrassing to experience in front of an audience.
The 7 mistakes that cause most school cable failures:
1. Coiling cables over your elbow and under your hand (the "roadie wrap" done wrong). This twists the internal conductors over time. The correct method is the over-under technique, alternating the direction of each loop. It takes ten seconds to learn and doubles cable lifespan.
2. Leaving cables plugged in when not in use. Connectors oxidize at the contact points. A cable left plugged into a mixer input for three months will have a noisier connection than one stored properly. Unplug, coil, store.
3. Running audio cables parallel to power cables. A microphone cable running alongside a mains extension cord will pick up 50Hz hum from the electrical field. In Kenya, where power quality can fluctuate, this is especially pronounced. Cross power and audio cables at 90 degrees if they must share a path.
4. Using unbalanced cables (TS/RCA) for long runs. Unbalanced cables are fine up to about 3 meters. Beyond that, they act as antennas, picking up interference. For any run longer than 3 meters in a school hall, you need balanced XLR or TRS cables. This is not a preference. It is physics.
5. Ignoring the connector, not just the cable. The weakest point of any cable is the solder joint inside the connector. Cheap connectors fail at the joint first. A quality Neutrik or Amphenol connector on a quality cable will outlast five cheap alternatives.
6. Storing cables in direct sunlight or near heat sources. The PVC jacket on most cables becomes brittle when repeatedly exposed to heat. A cable stored in a metal cabinet that sits in afternoon sun will crack at the jacket within a year, exposing the conductors.
7. Not labeling cables by length and type. This sounds administrative, not technical, but unlabeled cables get used wrong. A 1-meter patch cable gets stretched across a stage because it was the first one grabbed. Stretching a cable under tension stresses the connector joints. Label everything.
Run this quick audit on your school's cable store right now:
Pull out three cables at random. Check: are the connectors clean and free of corrosion? Is the jacket intact at both ends, especially within 10cm of the connector?
