Your Speakers Are Lying to You

You finish a mix at midnight. It sounds warm, balanced, punchy. You export it, play it in the car on the way to the client handover, and something is wrong. The bass is boomy. The vocals are buried. The hi-hats are harsh. You go back to the studio and it sounds fine again.

The speakers are not broken. They are just telling you what you want to hear.

Here is the mechanism most Kenyan producers are never taught.

Consumer speakers, including most Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, and even many "studio" monitors sold without proper specs, are tuned to sound pleasing. Manufacturers boost the low end so music feels full. They scoop the mids so nothing sounds harsh. They add a little air at the top so everything sparkles. This is called a coloured frequency response, and it is designed to make you enjoy listening, not to help you make accurate decisions.

A reference monitor is built to do the opposite. It is designed to reproduce audio as flat as possible across the frequency spectrum, meaning what you hear is what is actually in the recording, not a flattering version of it. When a mix sounds good on a flat reference monitor, it translates. It sounds good in the car, on earbuds, on a phone speaker, on a TV. When a mix sounds good on a coloured consumer speaker, it only sounds good on that speaker.

The second thing most producers miss is room interaction. In Nairobi, most home studios are in bedrooms or small rooms with parallel walls, no acoustic treatment, and furniture that reflects sound unpredictably. Even a perfectly flat monitor will give you inaccurate information if it is placed in the wrong position. The ideal placement is an equilateral triangle between the two monitors and your ears, with the tweeters at ear level, pulled at least 30cm from the wall behind them. Many monitors also have rear acoustic space controls (sometimes labelled "boundary EQ") that let you compensate for bass buildup when the speaker is close to a wall. If you have never adjusted that switch, your low-end decisions have been made on inaccurate information.

Self-audit

Right now, play a reference track you know well on whatever you currently mix on. Then play it on your phone speaker. Does the bass relationship change dramatically? Does the vocal level shift? If yes, your monitoring environment is colouring your decisions, and every mix you export is a guess.
