Monday, 7:20 AM, first day of second term. The school PA makes it through the anthem, then starts crackling during the head teacher's announcements. The teacher on duty shakes the mixer cable twice. The crackle answers anyway.

Here is what most schools never get told: a PA does not usually fail at once. It fades across the term break, and the break is exactly where the damage happens. Three forces do the work. First, dust. It settles on the speaker cone and packs into the amplifier's cooling vents, and once it does, the amp runs hotter than it was built to run. Second, heat. A speaker stacked in a locked classroom through hot afternoons cooks slowly, and that heat thins the glue and surrounds inside the drivers long before anyone hears a problem. Third, power cuts. Every time power returns with a surge behind it, the amplifier's internals take a small hit. After a few dozen of those hits, a channel simply dies, and nothing you can point at caused it on that day.

The diagnosis, next time it crackles: if the crackle moves when you move a cable, the fault is the connector. If it stays put when the cable stops moving, the fault is dust or a tired driver. If one channel went silent right after a power cut, suspect the fuse or the channel itself before blaming the speaker.

The fix costs twenty minutes per term, not new gear. During the half-term break, take the grille off and brush out the dust, unplug and replug every cable twice, which scrubs the oxidation off the contacts, and store the system dry, off the floor, and covered until the term resumes. A school that does this every term gets five good years from the same box that dies in eighteen months at the school that does not.

Your self-audit for this week: ask whoever keeps the key to the store room when the PA was last opened, dusted, and checked. If nobody can name a date, that is your answer, and that is the gap to close before the next assembly.
