The School’s New Mixer Was Fine Until Someone Plugged It Into the Wall.

At 7:05 AM before assembly, the school media team powers up its imported mixer. The display flashes, the unit clicks, and the room goes quiet. Someone says the mixer was faulty. Nobody checks the voltage label on the back.

Imported audio equipment may be designed for 110V, while Kenya’s mains supply is typically around 220V to 240V. Plugging a 110V device directly into the wall can damage the power supply before the first announcement is made.

A basic surge strip is not the same as a voltage regulator. A surge strip reacts to a sudden spike. An automatic voltage regulator continuously corrects incoming fluctuations and, when designed for it, steps the voltage down to the level the equipment requires.

Before connecting equipment, check three things:

  • The voltage printed on the equipment label.
  • The total wattage of everything connected.
