The School Microphone Was On. Why Could Nobody Hear the Prefect?

The prefect reaches the assembly microphone, says “good morning,” and the teachers at the back lean forward. The speaker is on. The volume is up. The words still disappear.

Before blaming the PA, look at the distance between the mouth and the microphone. A mic picks up the voice and the room around it. As the speaker moves farther away, turning up the system raises both. That can make an assembly louder without making the announcement clearer, and it can bring on feedback.

Try this at your next rehearsal: have someone read the same sentence from their usual position, then again with the microphone held a comfortable, consistent distance from their mouth. Ask a teacher at the back which version is easier to understand.

The first fix is teaching each speaker where to stand and how to use the mic. If different pupils and staff still need different setups, Zamar can help you choose a microphone that suits the way your school actually uses its PA. Getting the spoken word right beats buying more volume to cover a technique problem.
