The School That Recorded Its Own Graduation and Finally Sounded Like It Meant It

The deputy principal had the idea in January. Instead of hiring an outside crew for the graduation ceremony, the school would record it themselves. They had a laptop, a USB webcam, and a microphone that came bundled with a headset three years ago.

The before: what was actually happening.

The headset microphone they were using was an omnidirectional electret condenser, designed to pick up voice at 5 to 10 centimetres. At podium distance, it was picking up the room, the ceiling fan, the chairs scraping, and the PA system's own output feeding back into itself. The signal was thin, noisy, and completely uncontrolled.

The mechanism: why microphone polar pattern matters more than price.

A polar pattern describes which directions a microphone is sensitive to. An omnidirectional mic hears equally in all directions. A cardioid mic hears primarily from the front and rejects sound from the rear and sides. In an untreated room, a cardioid pattern is not a preference, it is a necessity. It is the difference between recording a voice and recording a room that happens to contain a voice.

A large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern captures more of the voice's natural body and warmth at distance, while rejecting the room reflections that make recordings sound hollow or boxy. The after.

The school's February graduation was recorded with a single large-diaphragm cardioid condenser on a boom stand, positioned correctly at podium height, running into a basic audio interface.
