"Peak Power" Is Not What Your School PA Can Actually Handle — Here Is What the Number Means

The tenders close on Friday. The school secretary forwards a quote from a supplier: "1200W speakers, stereo pair." The deputy principal ticks the box. Three months later, the speakers distort every time the head teacher raises her voice, and by December, one driver has failed completely.
Nobody lied. The speakers really were rated at 1200W. But that number meant almost nothing for how they actually perform.
Here is the mechanism most audio sellers never explain:
Every speaker carries two power ratings that look identical on a spec sheet but describe completely different things.
Peak power (sometimes called "music power" or "program power") is the maximum electrical energy a speaker can survive for a split second before something breaks. It is a stress-test ceiling, not an operating number. A speaker rated at 1200W peak may blow a driver the moment you run 1200W through it continuously for more than a few seconds, because it was never designed to sustain that.
AES power (sometimes called RMS or continuous power) is the number that actually governs daily use. It tells you how much power the speaker can handle cleanly, hour after hour, without thermal or mechanical failure. This is the number your amplifier must be matched to.
The confusion is predictable: a 300W AES speaker sounds less impressive than a "1200W speaker," even when the 300W AES unit is the more capable and more durable of the two. So suppliers quote the larger number. Buyers tick the box. Schools get speakers that survive the demo but not the term.
The second thing schools get wrong: room geometry. Outdoor assemblies, corridors with hard concrete walls, and multi-purpose halls all behave differently acoustically. A speaker that sounds fine in one context will either fail to project or cause painful flutter echoes in another. AES rating tells you the power handling. Sensitivity (measured in dB at 1W/1m) tells you how efficiently the speaker converts power to actual sound. A speaker with a higher sensitivity rating will sound louder and cleaner with less amplifier power, which is critical in battery-backup or generator-dependent school environments in Kenya where clean power is not guaranteed.
Quick self-audit for your institution:
Pull up the spec sheet for your current or planned speakers. Find two numbers: the one labeled "peak" or "music power," and the one labeled "AES," "RMS," or "continuous." If only one number appears and it is very large, that is the peak figure. The AES figure was either buried or omitted entirely.
