Spot the Mistake: 5 Home Audio Setups That Look Right But Sound Wrong

You spent three months getting the living room right. The sofa is perfect. The shelving is balanced. The lighting is warm. Then someone brings in a speaker that looks like it belongs in a matatu and sets it on the coffee table, and the whole room shifts.

Or worse: you bought a speaker that looked fine in the shop, brought it home, and now it sounds like it is arguing with your walls.

Both problems have the same root cause: most people choose home audio by price or brand recognition, not by how a speaker actually behaves in a real room. Let us fix that.

Setup A

A Bluetooth speaker is placed in the corner of the room, pushed against two walls, to "project sound into the room." The bass sounds huge. The vocals sound muddy.

What is wrong?

Corners are bass traps in reverse. Placing a speaker in a corner amplifies low frequencies by up to 6 dB because the sound bounces off two walls simultaneously. The result is boomy, indistinct bass that overwhelms the midrange where voices and instruments live. The speaker is not broken. The placement is.

Fix: Move the speaker at least 30 cm from any wall. If you need bass, choose a system with a dedicated subwoofer that you can position separately and tune to the room.

Setup B

A single Bluetooth speaker is placed in the center of a long rectangular living room to serve the whole space. It sounds fine near the speaker and thin at the far end.

What is wrong?

A single point source cannot fill a long room evenly. Sound from a single speaker follows the inverse square law: every time you double the distance from the source, the volume drops by 6 dB. By the time sound reaches the far end of a 6-meter room, it has lost significant energy. The room is not the problem. The speaker count is.

Fix: Two smaller speakers placed at either end of the room, or a 2.1 system with satellites positioned at listening height, will cover the space evenly without requiring volume levels that distort.

Setup C

A speaker is placed on a wooden shelf directly against the back wall. It sounds fine at low volume but rattles and buzzes at medium volume.

What is wrong?

The shelf is resonating. Wood has natural resonant frequencies, and when a speaker's bass output matches those frequencies, the shelf vibrates and adds its own noise to the signal. This is called sympathetic resonance, and it is one of the most common complaints from people who place speakers on furniture.

Fix: Place the speaker on a rubber isolation pad, or choose a speaker with a form factor designed for tabletop placement with its own acoustic isolation built in.

Setup D

A speaker is placed on top of a television unit, facing the listener. The sound is clear but seems to come from the wrong place, above the screen rather than from it.

What is wrong?

Vertical placement matters. When a speaker is significantly above or below ear level at the listening position, the brain decouples the sound from the visual source. For home cinema or music listening tied to a screen, the speaker should be at or near ear level when seated.

Fix: Lower the speaker to a position where the tweeter (the small high-frequency driver) is roughly at seated ear height. If the furniture does not allow this, a speaker with a downward-angled tweeter or a wide dispersion design compensates.

Setup E

A 2.1 speaker system is set up with the subwoofer placed on a high shelf "to save floor space." The bass sounds weak and directional.

What is wrong?

Bass frequencies below 80Hz are omnidirectional, meaning they radiate in all directions equally and the human ear cannot locate their source. This is why subwoofers are designed for floor placement: the floor acts as a boundary that reinforces bass output. Elevating a subwoofer removes that boundary reinforcement and makes the bass sound thin and localized.

Fix: Place the subwoofer on the floor, ideally near a wall but not in a corner. The satellites can go anywhere at ear level.
