The Graduation Speaker Was Loud Near the Stage. Parents at the Back Missed Every Name.

The school had tested the system before the graduation ceremony.

Near the stage, the microphone was clear and the music was loud. Once the seats filled and parents stood along the edges of the field, the back rows heard scattered words and reflections from nearby buildings.

The team responded by increasing the volume. The front became uncomfortable, but the back was still unclear.

This is a coverage problem, not simply a shortage of loudness.

A speaker does not distribute sound equally in every direction. Its position, height, angle, and distance from the audience determine who receives direct sound. People near the front may be overwhelmed while listeners farther away hear mostly reflections, wind, and crowd noise.

Speech is especially demanding. Music can remain recognisable when parts of it are lost, but a graduation name or safety announcement must arrive clearly the first time. Turning up the bass or adding more volume does little to restore missing consonants.

The crowd also changes the environment. An empty field during testing is not the same as a field filled with students, teachers, parents, tents, and decorations. People and fabric absorb some frequencies, while walls and hard surfaces send delayed copies back toward the audience.

A better event plan starts with the listening area:

  • Where will the final row of seats be?
  • Are the speakers high enough to project over the audience?
  • Are they aimed at listeners rather than nearby walls?
  • Will one pair cover the full distance evenly?
  • Can a second speaker position serve the rear without making the front painfully loud?
  • Has the microphone been tested from the actual speaking position?

Here is a simple test for the next school event. Ask one person to speak normally at the microphone while another walks from the front row to the final listening position. Do not only ask, “Is it loud?” Check whether every word remains understandable.

If clarity falls sharply with distance, more volume at the stage is not the first answer. The system needs better placement, coverage, or properly planned reinforcement.

For graduations, sports days, exhibitions, and outdoor school functions, Zamar’s events and DJ equipment collection provides the relevant PA, mixer, and control options for building the system around the audience area.

The right event system is not the one that sounds powerful beside the speaker. It is the one that delivers the headteacher’s final sentence clearly to the last parent at the back.
