What a proper pre-service checklist actually covers

1. Polar pattern check on every microphone.
Most church microphones are cardioid, meaning they pick up sound from the front and reject sound from the sides and rear. But cardioid is not a guarantee. It is a direction. 4. Monitor mix separate from front-of-house.
What the worship leader hears in the monitor and what the congregation hears through the mains are two different mixes. Confirm them separately. A worship leader who cannot hear themselves will push their voice, which changes the dynamic of the whole service.

5. Phantom power confirmed for every condenser.
If your church uses condenser microphones (which most should, for spoken word clarity), phantom power must be on at the console before the mic is plugged in. Plugging a condenser into a channel without phantom power does not just give you silence. It can damage the capsule over time.
