The Church That Bought Three Amplifiers Before Buying the Right One

A signal chain is the path your audio travels from source to speaker. Microphone to mixer. Mixer to amplifier. Amplifier to speaker. Every link in that chain has a job, and when one link is wrong, the problem shows up somewhere else in the chain, which is why it looks like a different problem every time.

The most common mistake Kenyan churches make is buying a passive mixer (one with no built-in amplifier) and a separate power amplifier, then connecting them without understanding gain staging. Gain staging is the process of setting the correct signal level at each point in the chain so that the signal is strong enough to be clean but not so strong that it distorts. When gain staging is wrong, you get either a weak, noisy signal or a distorted, harsh one. Turning up the amplifier to compensate for a weak mixer output does not fix the problem. It amplifies the noise along with the signal.

The second mistake is buying a separate EQ, amplifier, and mixer when a powered mixer does all three jobs in one unit, with the gain staging already optimised internally. A powered mixer has the amplifier built in, which means the signal path from mixer to speaker is shorter, the gain relationship is pre-matched, and there is one fewer cable run and one fewer point of failure.
