The guitarist turns up his amplifier. The worship leader asks for more guitar. The sound volunteer raises the channel, and suddenly the front rows hear hum, harshness, and a thin guitar tone.
The problem may not be volume. A guitar or bass sends an unbalanced, high-impedance signal. That signal is vulnerable to hum and interference, especially when a long instrument cable runs across a stage beside power cables. A mixer input is designed to work better with a balanced, lower-impedance signal.
A DI box sits between the instrument and the mixer. It converts the instrument signal into a balanced XLR feed, reduces noise over longer cable runs, and lets the musician continue feeding an amplifier through the link output. - Does the hum change when the musician touches the instrument strings?

If the answers point to the signal path, the fix is not another speaker or more mixer gain. It is proper signal conversion at the source.
