Halfway through worship, the front microphone let out a sharp squeal. The volunteer reached for the mixer and pulled down the treble on every channel. The squeal stopped, but the spoken word became dull, the singers lost clarity, and nobody knew whether the problem was actually fixed.
Feedback is not a general shortage of good sound. It is a loop. A microphone hears sound from a loudspeaker, the system amplifies it, and the microphone hears the louder version again. The loop becomes unstable at the frequencies where the room, microphone position, speaker direction, and gain happen to reinforce one another.
That is why cutting everything can hide the symptom while damaging the message. Start with the physical causes. Keep the speaking microphone behind the main speakers, point the microphone away from the nearest loudspeaker, keep the speaker aimed over the congregation instead of at the pulpit, and ask the speaker to stay close to the microphone. Then reduce only the narrow frequency that is ringing, rather than removing all the brightness from the service.
