The Bigger School Speaker Is Not Automatically the Better One

The assembly has already started. Students at the front can hear every word, but the back rows are turning around and asking what was said.

Someone recommends buying a bigger speaker. It sounds logical, but size and wattage are not the same as speech clarity.

For school announcements, the real question is not only, “How loud can this speaker get?” It is, “How evenly can it cover the room?”

A speaker can be extremely loud near the front and still be unclear at the back if:

• It is pointed too low or too high.
• The sound is bouncing off hard walls and windows.
• The microphone is too far from the person speaking.
• The speaker is being pushed beyond its clean operating range.
• One large cabinet is being used where two smaller, correctly placed speakers would cover the room better.

Speech depends heavily on the clarity of the important middle frequencies. More volume cannot repair muddy placement, excessive reflections, or a poor microphone position. It may only make the confusion louder.

Try this during your next assembly. Stand at the front, middle, and back of the hall while someone reads the same sentence. Do not judge only by volume. Ask yourself: where does the sentence remain understandable without effort?

That simple test tells you more than a large wattage number on a product box.
